Talking about Haze Value

Definition of Lens Haze Value

Haze value is a key parameter for evaluating the abrasion resistance and definition of ophthalmic lenses. It quantifies the extent of cloudy or hazy appearance caused by light scattering on the lens surface after specified abrasion. A higher haze value indicates poorer abrasion resistance of the lens, while a lower haze value corresponds to superior abrasion resistance.

Haze Test Method

National Optical Eyewear Inspection Centers adopt a standardized test procedure for haze measurement. The lens surface is subjected to 1,000 rubing back and forth using Grade 0 steel wool under a load of 0.75 kg. And then, we measured the transmittance after abrasion. The transmittance loss will be recorded as the haze value.

Haze Standard Requirement

As per ISO standards, the haze value of lenses after abrasion shall not exceed 0.8%. This request guarantees good wear resistance and definition under daily use, delivering premium vision performance for wearers.

Functions and Significance of Haze Value

Haze value directly reflects both the abrasion resistance and transmission performance of lenses, which in turn determines visual quality. If you select Lenses with low haze values and excellent wear resistance, it will provide long life and consistent high optical quality. Comprehensive lens performance evaluation also takes into account substrate materials and coating technologies.

Accurate haze measurement serves as a crtical factor for lens quality.  Professional testing instruments are essential to offer critical parameters including haze and abrasion resistance that complys with ISO standard.

As a distributor, Leading Optical runs the DF-2/2R Hazemeter. This instrument supports haze measurement at faint light levels with high repeatability result of 0.03% and  full haze value range of 0–100%. Equipped with two light sources (measurement light source and calibration light source), as well as automatic integrating sphere compensation, it delivers valuable and comprehensive solutions for lens R&D and production process.
